Final Animation

Rationale

In this project we used the assignment one brochure as a starting point for our concept. The brochure was about cool spots around Wellington to sit and eat a picnic, packed or take-away lunch. We adapted this concept into the Kaitiakitanga project brief by showing the activity of sitting down and eating a picnic over-looking Wellington city. Our animation is simple with only subtle movements like hair blowing in the wind and lighting changes etc. The sustainability aspect to our animation focuses on entertainment and activities that involve enjoying the scenery and nature that surrounds us, as well as escaping city life every once and a while. We can make our own picnics and enjoy the simple and often over-looked things in life in a sustainable way. With the focus of getting back to nature as a consideration in our project I believe our choice of creating a subtly animated digital story works well as nature itself is subtle and as mentioned before, is often over-looked. The sounds we have used are soothing with a focus on wildlife noises. The fireworks in the animation contradict the nature a little but we chose to use them to add excitement to our story. They also add romance to what is already quite a romantic scene. Seeing the distant city in the background shows their isolation, which combined with the fireworks, gives us an appreciation of the city from afar.

After Effects

The main part in the making of the animation was the background and making sure that there was a smooth transition though each of the main times of day to make it more realistic. to do this we just used the opacity tool.

The next part was adding the people. They show movement of wind and time we made the guys head move slowly over time and the girls hair moving gently as if in wind.

The clouds, birds and fireworks are all in the sky giving the poster more excitement as they pass through the screen at different points of the day. They also show the peacefulness of the space as the couple are not being interrupted but can still enjoy them.

The music we added was to give it that extra feel of being in nature and relaxing throughout the day and then later the fireworks needed sound to be effective in the poster.

Animated Components

These are the moving parts illustrated for our animation.

Character Design

These are our characters. The first image was our concept draw up to get the shapes and proportions correct and the second image are our final characters.

Background Illustration

This is the background illustration for our animation. We created three different versions, one day, sunset and night.

Reference Images

We took these images at a picnic area in wellington. These will be the referencing images we will use when illustrating the scene.

Chosen Thumbnail

We chose the thumbnail of the couple sitting on a hill that over looks Wellington City. They are having a picnic. This links in with the Assignment 1 brochure as the people are out and about Wellington whilst eating their picnic. The sustainable aspect to our idea is the ability to still find fun and enjoyment in peaceful, non-built up areas of Wellington. It is important that we hold on to this as it is important to enjoy the simple things in life. Nature is too easily overlooked.

Thumbnailing

These are our thumb nailed ideas relating to the brochure and brief.

Brochure From Assignment 1

Below is the brochure from assignment 1 that we are basing this project on. The brochure is about places to stop and eat your lunch around Wellington.

Learning the Wacom Tablet

In class we started off learning how to use the Wacom Tablet. Using the Lasso tool we created these images.
